Squatting is the act of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use. (Source: Wikipedia) It is more common here in the Philippines especially in the urban areas. It is a major issue in the Filipino society and until now the numbers of squatters are increasing.

Photo by: Andre SalvadorWe can’t blame the squatters to occupy abandoned spaces because these people don’t actually have a house of their own. They even don’t have money to rent a house or an apartment because all of them are living below poverty line. If ever they have money, their first priority would be food for their family. These people are not thinking about having a luxurious house where home owners insurance rates are needed. A nice, big and comfortable house might be one of their dreams but all they can think for now is a place to stay where they can survive. Even if their house is not comfortable, still they occupy it because they don’t have a choice. Good thing, a lot of NGO’s are now reaching out to these people and are giving them free houses, but only to a few. I hope the government will truly focus on solving this problem in the Philippines.
Anyway, it is my prayer that the Lord will continue to bless the Filipino people and the Philippines as well.
